About

How membership works

Membership in Youth Civic Project is free. It gives you access to member tools on the website and in the YCP Discord server. Public pages stay open to everyone, with or without an account.

Membership is not a legal retainer. Joining does not make YCP your lawyer, and it does not make you an officer or ambassador. Those seats are applied for and approved separately.

Who can join

Youth members are generally ages 13 to 17. Features beyond reading public pages need family consent from a parent or guardian.

Young adult members ages 18 to 25 can do everything a youth member can, and may also help write modules.

Volunteers and moderators sign the volunteer code. Chat moderators go through extra screening before they can moderate.

Members may join from any country.

What you get as a member

  • Full text of the Rights and Life & Law pages and Case of the Day
  • The eight Learn modules, with saved progress toward Reader, Analyst, and Civic Builder
  • Member lessons, such as How a Bill Becomes Law
  • Saved, moderated chat and voice rooms
  • Volunteer hour logging and verification letters for approved hours
  • Applications for officer and ambassador roles
  • Connection to the official Discord server, with roles that match your website account

Unlocking chat and service hours

Reading is open to every member right away. To use saved chat or request an hours letter, you sign three short agreements:

  1. 1. The Youth Code of Conduct, which covers how members treat each other on the site, in chat, and on Discord.
  2. 2. The Legal Education Disclaimer, which explains that the site is for learning and is not legal advice.
  3. 3. The No Attorney-Client Relationship acknowledgment, which confirms that no one at YCP is acting as your lawyer.

If you are 13 to 17, a parent or guardian also completes family consent. Your signed copies are stored under Agreements on your profile.

How verification and roles work

When you join the Discord server, you start with the New role, which only opens the GATE channels. Once your agreements (and family consent, if you are 13 to 17) are on file and you connect Discord from your member desk, the bot gives you the Member role and the rest of the server opens.

Other roles, such as officer or ambassador roles, are assigned on the website first. Connect Discord or click Sync roles, and the server updates to match. How verification works.

Family link for parents and guardians

Members ages 13 to 17 can send a family link from their dashboard. It lets a parent or guardian confirm the account and see approved volunteer hours and signed documents. It does not let them chat as the member or change hours. The Parents page has a printable packet with more detail.

Leaving

You can stop using YCP at any time. To close your account or ask about your data, use the Contact page.

Frequently asked questions

Is Discord required?
No. Discord is optional. Everything important also happens on the website.

Why are there agreements?
They keep chat safe and make clear that YCP is education, not legal help.

Can I become an officer right away?
Not automatically. Officer seats are applied for and reviewed. Most people start by using the modules and getting involved in the community.
